FOREST PEST BIOLOGICAL CONTROL PROGRAM IN HAWAI't
نویسنده
چکیده
Forest weeds were not considered to be a major management problem in Hawai'i until the latter quarter of the last century. Most previous biological control programs in the state were against agricultural pests. An interagency committee (U.S.D.A. Forest Service, National Park Service, Hawai'i Department of Agriculture, Hawai'i Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and the University of Hawai'i) was established to encourage studies of forest pests, develop biological control agents and foster the implementation of their recommendations. The progress of biological control efforts against the following weeds in Hawai'i are presented: Clidemia hirta, Hedychium gardnerianum, Miconia calvescens, Myrica faya, Passitlora mollissima, Psidium cattleianum, Rubus ellipticus, and Tibouchina herbacea. Recommendations are made for the establishment of oversight (action) committees for each targeted species, long-term commitment to a program once started, more thorough studies in the native range of the target species using local experts and students and a full-time advocate scientist for forest pest biological control in the Islands.

Sunn pest is one of the most important cereal pests that affect both grain yield and quality of cerealin Iran. One potential control strategy is to use entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveriabassiana Vuillemin as mycoinsecticide to control this pest. Naturally infested Sunn pests inKermanshah province were collected and brought to laboratory. 10 isolates were selected forfurther analysis in th...
متن کاملForest bolsters bird abundance, pest control and coffee yield.
Efforts to maximise crop yields are fuelling agricultural intensification, exacerbating the biodiversity crisis. Low-intensity agricultural practices, however, may not sacrifice yields if they support biodiversity-driven ecosystem services. We quantified the value native predators provide to farmers by consuming coffee's most damaging insect pest, the coffee berry borer beetle (Hypothenemus ham...

The first attempt by man at classical biological control of an arthropod pest was a spectacular success. The cottony cushion scale (Icerya purchasi Maskell) program in California over the period 1877-1879 was the first scientifically and institutionally backed biological control program. Foreign exploration by Arthur Koebele, resulted in the importation and release of two natural enemies, the v...
متن کاملPest Damage and Integrated Control
A broader, more comprehensive concept of forest pest management is needed to make it a really integral part of forest resource management. A generalized model structure of a forest pest management system is presented, and the major components are discussed briefly. Predictive models are the primary mechanism of information flow to decision and action in the system. General considerations affect...
متن کاملRandom Forest and Objected-based Classification for Forest Pest Extraction from Uav Aerial Imagery
Forest pest is one of the most important factors affecting the health of forest. However, since it is difficult to figure out the pest areas and to predict the spreading ways just to partially control and exterminate it has not effective enough so far now. The infected areas by it have continuously spreaded out at present. Thus the introduction of spatial information technology is highly demand...
